Winter Driving Tips – 2012

The best way to stay safe is to be prepared for when things go wrong, because go wrong they will!

Here are some winter driving tips to keep you and your loved ones safe.

Before you head out on your trip, thoroughly research and plan your route. Also keep an eye on the latest weather information. It can change in an instant and sometimes it could be the worse.

Winterize your car. That means getting the appropriate oil for colder weather, have your mechanic check your engine coolant levels and battery, put a set of snow tires on your car or make sure your all-season ones are well inflated and in good condition.

If you don’t already know how, learn to properly recover from skid on ice. Watch THIS short video, which simply explains how to do it! Watch it a few times, because in the moment when you are skidding, it’s easy to panic and do the wrong thing.

Pack an emergency winter kit in your car. You never know when you’re going to need it and you’ll probably never regret packing it. It’s never a bad thing to over prepare in my book. It should include:

  • Flares
  • Blankets
  • Boots
  • Radio
  • Engine oil
  • Washer fluid
  • Coolant
  • Flashlight
  • Small shovel
  • Water

The easiest way to stay safe on icy roads is SLOW DOWN! Getting there late is better than not getting there at all!

Stay safe this winter!

***SLOW DOWN***
